PAYMENT OF MEMBERS
MUCH OPPOSITION RAISED. (United Press Association.) Received December 8, 7.20 p.m. SYDNEY, December 8. In addition to strong press condemnation, the Bill increasing members’ salaries is meeting with much opposition at the second reading stage in the Assembly. The Progressive Party has notified that they will vote against it en bloc, and many Nationalists oppose the "grab” without first consulting the (.lectors. Generally the feeling is that Ministers who give the whole of their t me to the business of Parliament are entitled to an increase, but members are not. One strong opposition argument is the new Idea which has arisen in regard to the position of a member of Parliament who is now looked upon as a man who obtains ids livelihood from his position in Parliament instead of being a man who served his country for patriotic purposes, thereby the whole lone of Parliament was being lowered.
