THEIR WORK ABROAD. SOCIAL GATHERING IN LONDON. (From our London Correspondent.) LONDON, September 50Siffllted Dy Mr C. H. Chomley, of tho Britisrh Australasian, the weekly Austrajsgjjm luncheons held at the First Avenue Hotel, High Holborn, are now under—the auspices of the London brancTfTof the Australian Natives' Association. That of Tuesday this week was 'auspicious as the occasion was used for a gathering of literalteurs, artists and actors hailing from New Zealand. They had been brought together by the efforts of Mr Sliayle Gardiner, the well-known actor, who is playing a leading role in "The Wandering Jew," at the New Theatre. The party included Mr Harry Rountree, the artist. Miss Dora Wilcox, your distinguished poetess," and that charming actress, Miss May Beatty. In the chair was Colonel J. Reay, president of the A.N.A. branch, who expressed the pleasure of the branch members and others present at the honour done by the attendance of so many who had won lustre for New Zealand in the field of intellect. Mr Gardiner delivered a most interesting address, in which he ryTiewed the work of New Zcalanders who had achieved fame abroad as well as iirtllelr dear Motl'rerland. "New Zealand holds her own in the arts," he said, "and I think it is time to mark the fact." The lunch was in every way enjoyable, and it is anticipated that like special gatherings will take place at the like future reunions of Australians and New Zealanders here. The proceedings at these luncheons are not marred'by any formalities and their lenV'th'is kept within the compass of the time that a man can spare from his the middle of a busy flay.
