JAPANESE CONCENTRATION
OF TROOPS IN FORMOSA, LARGE ENCAMPMENT REPORTED. AN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received December 5, 11.35 p.m. NEW YORK, December 4. The Chicago Tribune's correspondent aboard a ship off Formosa has sent wireless messages stating that Japan is maintaining a large military camp on the lower end of Formosa within a day's sail of San Fernando in the Phillipines. The despatch states that Tokjo is aiding the camp unobtrusively by means of a ileet of transports carrying men and supplies. The correspondent, while unable to verify the reports estimating that the troops number 30,000 states that personal observations show that the camp covers several hundred acres. He adds that disquieting reports are being circulated through the American Far-Eastern colonies regarding Japanese activity. The Japanese explain that/lhe troops have been mobilised for the control of the natives. WASHINGTON, December 5. The State Department and Navy Department have announced that they have no information regarding lite reported Japanese concentration of troops in Formosa.
