WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the WaJkatj Hospital and Charitable Aid Buard w.x.s hold yesterday, there being present Messrs J. P. Bailey, C. Johnstone, Dickinson, G. Edgeoumbe, J. Ryburn, J. Anderson, H. E. Tristram, R. Seavill, A. Wagstaff, A. G. Dent, F. Potts, J. B. Teasdale and Blackmail.

An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr Mill Motor Ambulances.

The Department of Public Health endorsed a cablegram received, which slated that the War Office advised that, owing to local disturbance, they were unable this year to issue mechanical transports due to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to replace those handed over in France. Issue would be made as early as possible. This meant that Hospital Boards were not likely to obtain the motor ambulances promised for some months. The chairman reported that he had inspected several ambulances in Auckland, and a firm would submit prices to the Board. Stocks of Coal.

The Department of Health notified that hospitals and similar institutions were to receive llrst call on available supplies of coal. Boards were advised to lay in stocks of coal and firewood during the summer. ; The secretary reported that the hospital at present held very fair supplies of coal. Increased Grant Wanted.

The Department of Public Health wrote that a request had been received from the To Akatea Miners' and Settlers' Medical'Association, Waipa Collieries, Glen Massey, that the grant ariade to the Association by the Waikato Hospital Board (£2O per annum) be increased. Owing to a new agreement with two doctors of Ngaruawahia, it had been found necessary to increase the weekly contribution per member from Is 3d to Is 9d. The membership of the Association was 90. It was stated that the £2O granted last year was not intended to be an annual grant, but merely a donation at that particular time. Board's Borrowing Powers.

The Minister of Public Health wired that an amendment had been carried giving Hospital Boards the power to raise money by debentures, and legalising the taking of these up by the Public Trustee. The Act would come into force on April I. The secretary reported that the Board had already an old application in for £78,000. A Stretcher Wanted. The clerk of the Wharapapa Road Board asked that a stretcher (recently patented) be purchased, capable of being attached to any motor car, so that severe cases in the backblocks might be taken at any hour of the day or night direct to tne hospital,—Decided to write for further information.

Mr Teasdale offered to pay for a stretcher. —Offer accepted with thanks. Gratification whs expressed that something had been done to meet the needs of the backblock-settlers. General.

The Department of Health notified that goods ordered were being shipped from England, anil should arrive in December or early in January.—Decided to obtain storage accommodation. Messrs Swarbrirk and Swarbrick notified that the Board had no power to sell certain land, and the Cambridge Borough Council had decided to lake ii under the Ael. They had drawn up an agreement fixing the amount of compensation.— -Kcceived. Mr .1. S. Strang forwarded transfer of section from Mr P. M. Burrows to Mr M. E. Spencer, for consent. — Deferred. Mr R. Pacldon asked if he could build more than one house on the section held by him in Ulster Street, and sell one portion.—Secretary to report. .Mr .1 Pomeroy asked the Board's consent to subdivide Lot 59E, Hamilton West.—Granted. Mr L. E. Rice asked for Glasgow leases of sections in Ulster and Victoria Strecas.—Agreed to. ' '•

The House and Finance Committee recommended that the architect prepare an estimate of the cost of painting the hospital, to he placed on- next year's estimates. —Approved. Mr Miles Schofleld, engineer to the hospital, asked for nn increase of salary or a house allowance.—Referred- to House Committee.

A similar course .was adopted in the case of O. C. Schofleld.

Matron Holdsworth, of the Kavvhia Cottage Hospital, applied for an increase in salary, also for travelling expenses from Wellington.—Decided to grant the travelling expenses and Dr. Gower was instructed to report on the position at Kawhia. Mr T. Hinton was appointed to succeed Mr .1. KlcCaw on the House and Finance Committee.

The secretary reported the receipts for the monih to be £llOO as Od (fees £383 17s 3d.) The dr. balance at the Bank of New Zealand was £413. District Nurse H. E. Roberts. Mokni, and Natives' District Nurse Oalcdcn, submitted monthly reports.—Adopted.
