SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND
HAMILTON OPERATIONS ENDED.
TOTAL OF OVER £3OOO RAISED.
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY URGED
The Hamilton committee of the "Save the Children" Fund held its final meeting yesterday afternoon. The treasurer's report, giving the following statement, was presented and approved:—Total contributions £3069 Is, total expenditure £65 14s 9d, total remitted £3OOO, balance in hand £3 6s 3d.
The total number of contributors, not including school children and others who contributed in groups, was about i 150: Twenty donations of £25 were received, and one above that amount. The committee is particularly grateful to the ladies who undertook the house to house canvass, to the children and schools, to Mr Barry Marschel, and to the Waikato Times Company, for their special services, as well as W those other workers whose keenness and enthusiasm made the campaign such a pronounced success.
Though the campaign is officially cosed, contributions are still trickling hi, and the treasurer will forward any belated contributions which may be sent.
Before concluding its business the following resolution was unanimously passed: "The Hamilton committee of the Save the Children Fund at its final meeting wishes to record its opinion (1) that the question of helping the children of Europe who are suffering on account of the war—distress, perhaps, unparalleled in history —is too great and important for private benevolence; (2) that, taking into account the fa® Chat the British Government is subsidising New Zealand contributions, the New Zealand Government should do something by subsidy ir grant to make the New Zealand contribution an adequate expression of the Country's humanitarian instincts."
