OBITUARY
MR. DANIEL FALLON. Mr Daniel Fallon, wiio had much to do with works in connection with the development of Auckland, has just ■died at his residence. Victoria Avenue, Remuera, aged SO years. Mr and Mrs Fallon arrived in Auckland in the shin Gertrude, on February f), US63, and he et once started in business as a contractor. -It can be truthfully stated, he built for the future. Mr Fallon constructed the railway from Mercee to Ngaruawahia, and Ohaupo to Te Awamutu, also four miles of the railway from Morrinsville to Rotorua. He also carried out reclamation work in the Waitemata harbour, including the are i from where the freezing works are located to Queen's wharf. This necessitated cutting away one of Auckland's land marks, known as the Sugar Loaf. He also sank the first trial hole for Calliope dock and reclaimed the area in Freeman's Bay, now the site of Victoria Park. During the early days ol' the Thames goldfields Mr Fallon, who held an engineer's certificate, was manager for a time of the Old Alburnia battery. Deceased was a man of great mental and physical energy, and very well read, being the possessor of an extensive library. He was throughout his life a keen sportsman. During his lengthy residence in New Zealand Mr Fullon never sought public office beyond serving two years as a member of the Remuerp. Road Board. Mr Fallon had a fund of interesting reminiscences of Auckland in the early days. Deceased is survived by Mrs Fallon, two daughters, and three sons, Mess'-s William and D. E. Falion, of Auckland, and J. Fallon, of Napier.
