THE BOROUGH ELECTION.

(To the Editor.) gi r> The parly which comprise Mr Walts’ “cabinet” must have tell very pleased with Hie effusion in last night s Times, when, in dumb dog fashion they appended their names to the document They are all docile followers, and have faithfully contracted the habit of bowing to the superior wisdom of their leader. Did they not a lewdays previously at the crack of the same gentleman’s party whip meekly hand him their resignations, and he had the jovial task of handing the whole packet to the Town Clerk. When at the end of the column of inaccuracies the legal luminary says, “The Opposition candidates point to ill years scivice, hut they can’t show anything they have done”: these aeconimodatin n gentlemen once again meekly surrender, not realising that if Ihis statement applies to the opposition it also hits most of them. Do they realise Hie tribute they pay to Hie memory of deceased mayors, ih the persons of Mr .1 K. Hammond and Mr .f. kV Kills, both of whom shortened their lives by tlieii great services to (he borough. Surely they unthinkingly slultillod themselves in their eagerness to glorify Mr Walts. I would like to here say that Mr Fow rose to Hie call of Hie community during the trying, treacherous period of (he war. and at great personal sacrifice diil his duly manfully, while both his partner and eldest son were at Hie front. The manner in which lie assisted to grapple with Hie epidemic will ever be remembered by a grateful community, and I predict H for no other reason Hie public will place him well at (lie head of Hie poll ‘on Wednesday next. Mr Walts is again highly entertaining when 1m says “the issue (recent poll) was so highly technical that the ratepayers could not possibly judge on it themselves.” What glory again for Hie faithful brainy seven. Possibly Hie most amusing part of Mr Watts’ column of matter is Hie reason why the Faithful Seven resigned, viz., ■‘Because they developed a definite policy, and Hie ratepayers rejected it.” No doubt this is true, but if so why did Mr Walls state that Hie reason of his resignation was the report of the town clerk on the purchase of a motor vehicle? It is a pity the public could not fully realise how near Hie town was of missing- the visit of the Prince of Wales, and Hie community thereby being held up to eternal ridicule. In Hie face' of this Mr Watts and Ids cabinet have the cffronlery to put their names to the statement, “they have the interests of the town at heart, and think they are Hie best people to forward them.” —I am, etc., JAS. E. TJDD. Hamilton, 1.1111 May,
