FRANCHISE FOR WOMEN
SOUTH AFRICAN PROPOSAL. Received May 13. 5.3 b p.m. , CAPETOWN, May li. The Assembly, by 66 to 47 votes, granted leave for the introduction of a private Bill extending the franchise' to women. General Smuts, while strongly in favour of the principle, said; that it was desirable that the matter be dealt with on non-party lines; therefore the Government could not father the-Bill. He urged the House to give the Bill a chance.
