OUTRAGES IN IRELAND

POLICE BARRACKS BLOWN UP. A GALLANT DEFENCE MADE. ANOTHER BARRACKS FIRED ON. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received January 5, 9.45 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 4. Unknown raiders blew up the police barracks at Carrigadouid, gassed the occupants and stole £65. Another party fired into the police barracks at Garrignavar, where the occupants had a narrow escape. A later message gives sensational details of the Carrigadrohid outrage. It is estimated that 100 or more Sinn Peiners were concerned. They converged upon the village on bicycles and in motorcars. The police were just able to communicate with Cork before the telephones were cut. The Sinn iFciners commenced by firing volleys into the barracks. Six policemen replied, shooting into the darkness, but the results are not known. The Sinn Fciners were able to place an explosive at one end of the barracks and blow in the wall. They rushed across the debris and captured and( handcuffed the defenders. They then held a council to decide whether the police should be shot forthwith,..but finally decided that they should not, as they had made a brave defence. The Sinn Feiners decamped with the loot just as armed reinforcements arrived from Cork. The latter released the handcuffed police, but no arrests were made.
