N.S.W. STATE ORCHESTRA

THE HAMILTON CONCERT. The members of the New South Wales State Orchestra received an enthusiastic welcome upon their arrival in Auckland on Sunday. They will open their New Zealand tour in the Queen City to-morrow (Wednesday) night, and on the following • night (Thursday) will give a concert in Hamilton, which, judging by yie interest already displayed, will be as successful financially as dt is sure to he artistically. The programme an- i nounced shows Mr Henri Verbrugghen’s zeal for a comprehensive choice of works, ranging from 'the classical to *the modern and ultra-modern, and Ineluding the romantic and transitionary periods in all their inflections. <O4/ The orchestra’s last performance . was made in Sydney last week when a crowded Town Hall cheered the travellers to the echo, wishing them bon voyage and a safe return. The conductor, Mr Verbrugghen, made a speech, thanking them for their'interest, and stating that he trusted that he would have as enthusiastic and sympathetic treatment at the hands of the New Zealanders as he had received in the Australian centres. The orchestra expacts to take some six weeks over its New Zealand tour; as 73 concerts have been given in Australia within the last three months, it is reasonable to hope that the musical education of the Dominion will have made considerable progress before these talented pgpple return. Hamilton music lovers should reserve their seat’s at Paul’s Book Arcade.

A RUMOUR DENIED. .f •' it having been rumoured that the full New South Wales State Orchestra will not come to Hamilton for the concert on Thursday night, the local secretary (Mr A. E. Webb) communicated Mr Gladstone Hill, the N.Z. fTrepresentative, and received the following reply;—“Rumour entirely without foundation. Arrangements already made with railway to take the party of over 90. I have Mr Verbrugghen’s authority that the programme will he the same as that played at Auckland on Wednesday night, which includes the gigantic “Symphony Pathetiquc” of Tschaikowsky.”
