NEGOTIATIONS IN AMERICA. APPROACHING A COMPROMISE. (Australian and N.Z. Gable Assn.) Received January 4, 5.5 p.m. WASHINGTON, Jan. 2. It is understood that the Republican mild reservationists will consult with the Democrats and formulate a compromise which they will then submit to Mr Lodge for acceptance. Democratic senators conferred amongst themselves to-day, and the mild reservationists conferred with several democrats. It is felt that the forces for a compromise are progressing satisfactorily. •' RATIFICATION BY JAPAN. * -Received January 4, 5.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 2. The York Times' Washington correspondent states that the State Department has been informed that Japan's ratification of the Treaty was sent to the Secretariat of the Peace Conference on December 26. ANNOUNCEMENT OF SIGNATURE. GERMAN SUSPENSE RELIEVED. AN APPEAL TO THE NATION. (Received Jan. 4, 11.5 p.m.) BERLIN, Jan. 2. The suspense here was relieved by the announcement that peace was signed in Paris on Tuesday. There, is deep gloom in Government circles because the Allies did not relent regarding the delivery of the Kaiser, officials and*officers for trial. Herr Ebert, in a New Year's nicssage, says: "Under the pressure of ruthless < compulsion we must conclude a peace threatening to place at the mercy of j foreigriers'our honour, welfare anil the fruits of our past and future labours.'' Herr Ebert called upon the Germans to close up their ranks and do the utmost to reconstruct the Fatherland.
