TEACHERS IN CONFERENCE. REMITS ADOPTED. The following remits were pass* ~ * the annual meeting of the New Zeai Technical School Teachers’ Associ - tion in Wellington: — “That all teachers in technical schools who are engaged for not less than 20 hours per week, whether employed directly or indirectly by the education boards, shall be eligible to vote at the election of meobers of the Council of Education.’’ “That this association places on record its appreciation of the services of the Hon. J. A. Hahan to the cause of education during his term of oflico as Minister for Education.” “That full daytime education be compulsory up to the age of sixteen years. '’ * “That except in country districts all boys and girls shall, between the ages of 16 and IS, receive daytime, instruction for not loss than eight hours a week for 30 weeks a year.” “That, in order to correlate and syslemise the teaching of agriculture throughout New Zealand, a conference consisting of representatives of the following be held: —(a) Agricultural instructors; (b) directors of technical schools; (c) supervisors of manual training; (d) officials of the Agricultural and Education Departments; (e) successful practical farmers from the various districts of the Dominion.” “That students leaving the primary schools be directed as to their future course of education —such directions to be niade by a small advisory committee —after taking into consideration the probable future vocation of the child.” “That a syllabus of work, similar to that used in primary schools, be drawn up for technical schools, and, with a view to giving greater weight to technical school certificates, a board of examiners be set up.” “That provision be made for the adequate training' in teaching of assistants in technieal schools.” “That trade apprentices be required to attend technical classes and receive training therein during the period of apprenticeship for at least one-half day per week.” “That the Minister for Education be asked, to increase the capitation to manual training classes, and that this association respectfully urges that the capitation be made up to at least £l.” “TThat the Minister for Education be asked to pay the maintenance grant of £SOO now paid to technical schools to all technical schools where day classes are carried on, and the director is giving his whole time to the work of the school.” “That separate representation on the Council of Education be given to technical school teachers and boards of governors.” “That paragraph 4 of the regulations for attendance at continuation and technical classes gazetted May 15, 191 b, is unworkable, inasmuch as the compulsory course laid dovm prevents sufficient attention being given to the wishes of the parents or the needs of th,e child.” ‘ . ’“That power be put in the hands of education boards and managers of technical and secondary schools to prohibit certain children from employment out of school hours, and that no child should be employed for more than eight hours per day, inclusive of school hours.” ‘ ‘ That the principle of the co-ordina-tion of all grades of education be affirmed—and that the institution ot one controlling authority in each district for all State-controlled schools and colleges be approved as a step in this direction.” . 1 “That the president and the secretary' of the executive of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers' Association be resident in one centre or district.”
