SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY SLOAN MORPETH. BY 4 UP AND 3 TO PLAY. The final gam« for the South Auckland Golf Championship was played on the Hamilton Golf Club’s links at St. Andrews yesterday between H. T. Gillies (Hamilton) and S. Morpeth (Waihi) over a 36-hole course. The Hamilton player was one up. at the end of the first 18 holes of the morning’s play. Gillies played good golf in the morning, but in the afternoon he did not play so well. Morpeth’s play improved then, and the game terminated at the 33rd hole in Morpeth’s favour: 4 up and 3 to play. Morpeth was runner-up, after a tie, in the New Zealand open championship recently decided at Napier, being beaten by Douglas (professional).

Tho First Eighteen. Gillies w«m the toss on the tee. The first hole was halved in 4 and the second i n 5. The third saw Gillies in the rough, and Morpeth won the hole in 4. Gillies made a good drive going to the fourth, but his opponent landed in the rough. He made a good recovery, however, and won the hole, again in 4. Gillies started badly going to the fifth, but a brilliant 15ft putt gave him the hole in 4. After both had got in good drives to 'the sixtii, Gillies made a wonderful putt of 24ft to hole out in 3, and made the game all square. At the seventh both were on the edge of the green in 3. Morpeth played a beautiful brassie for his second. Gillies got a good third, but it failed to reach the green. Morpeth played a pitch mashie with his third, reaching the green. Gillies played lus fourth short out of the rough. He holed ia 6 to Morpeth’s 5, leavihg the latter 2 up. 26th: Both men drove well, but Gillies finished in the rough. Gillies’ second was a good shot, but it just failed to get over the •— est. Morpeth was on the green with h s second. GilI’es played a short third and his fourth finished two yards to the right of the Dole. Morpeth’s third almost holed, and he won the hole in 4, Gillies not holing out. Morpeth 3 up. 27th: Morpeth again drove well, but tff the left,, almost reaching the bunker on the 11th green. Gillies got in a fairly good drive with the wind against him, and his second was particularly good. Morpeth got a gpod iron for his second. Gillies' third was foozled, but his fourth was good. Morpeth lay his third within 2ff, and won in 4: Gillies not holing. Morpeth-4 up at the turn and the 6th hole he had won in succession.
