DAY BY DAY.

The conference held at Hamilton on Thursday between Annual Sale the breeders of of pedigree stock and Pedigree Stock, the representatives of the auctioneering firms should bear good fruit by raising the standard of the annual sale of purebred cattle. Last year’s sale was the subject of much adverse comment, both on account of the condition and class of much of the stock entered, and a repetition of such a state of affairs would unquestionably do much towards killing the local pedigree sale, as prospective buyers would conclude that time taken up in attending the gathering could be put to. more profitable use. It is, therefore, gratifying to see that the breeders of the district have acted promptly in the matter of effecting improvement, and that the sympathetic cooperation of Hie auctioneering companies is assured. There is no reason why the Waikato pedigree stock sale should not set the standard for the whole Dominion and attract entries and purchasers from distant districts. To accomplish this, however, will require the exercise of much care on the part of all breeders concerned, but by such care they would reap a handsome reward eventually, through the recognition and appreciation of dealers generally. When a buyer attends a pedigree stock sale lie naturally expects to have a good stamp of animal placed before him, not beasts in poor condition, and concern- I

ing the breeding of which there is much doubt and guesswork. The resolutions framed and adopted at Thursday’s conference, if faithfully observed, should effect great improvement and raise tiie standard and importance of future sales. The people of Hamilton should feel proud of their lire A Word brigade. It lias a of record which speaks Appreciation, volumes for its alertness and efficiency, and it has been instrumental in saving much valuable property during the past few months. On one or two occasions it has been called out to fires which threatened to develop into serious conflagrations, hut the brigade tackled their job in a prompt and businesslike manner, with the result that the flames were speedily reduced and damage kept down to a minimum. It reflects the highest credit upon Superintendent Thompson and ids men that sueli potential outbreaks as those at Hyde’s garage and Greensladc’s foundry, not to mention others, were so promptly subdued. They certainly deserve the thanks of the townspeople for their excellent work in the public interest. Like all public institutions, the brigade has at times in the past been subjected to some caustic criticism at the hands of those who were ignorant of the disabilities under which the members laboured. It will therefore be all the more heartening for them to know that their services are generally appreciated by a grateful public who recognise that the brigade is a credit to the members, collectively and individually, as well as a valuable institution in the town.
