LABOUR UPHEAVAL
STORMY MEETING IN JOHANNESBURG. RETRENCHING MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES. (Reuter’s Telegrams.) JOHANNESBURG, March 29. A meeting of the Town Council, after a hot debate, decided by 18 votes to 13 to retrench 30 employees at the municipal power station. The galleries were crowded with Council employees and other workers, who hurled threats and curses at the councillors. They sang “The Red Flag” and dispersed in disorder. Thera was a dramatic episode at the conclusion, a Labourite councillor shouting, ‘,Thc Council will rue the day it crossed swords with organised labour."
A ballot of master builders in Johannesburg and Pretoria was overwhelmingly against further concessions to the men on strike.
