WITHOUT A LICENSE
MOTORISTS FINED, j FOR PLYING FOR HIRE. rv Raymond Lister, of Auckland, who failed to appear, was charged at the Police Court, Hamilton, yesterday, with having driven a motor car in Hamilton on race day without a license. Inspector de Silva gave evidence that defendant had conveyed passengers to the racecourse in his car, and seemed to be doing pretty well out df it. His Worship imposed a fine of £3, with costs 7s, on the first charge, and 10s on the second. A. E. Short, of Auckland (represented by Mr Bell), pleaded guilty to similar charges. He urged in extenuation that lie had applied to the Borough Council for a license, and was told that if he came to Hamilton on the Friday there would bo time for the .issuing of one. He did so, but the police held that they had not sufficient time to make enquiries and recommend the granting of the license, although defendant had his five years’ licenses from Auckland, and a constable from Auckland was prepared to recommend the license. Fines of £3 on the first charge, and 10s on the second, with costs, were inflicted.
