WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Waikato County Council took place at Hamilton Bast yesterday afternoon. Cr. Paterson presided, and there were also present Crs. Newell, Thomas, Goodwin and Hinton. Ngaruawahia Bridge, Cr. Thomas wanted to know what was being done in regard to the Ngaruawahia bridge. The chairman said they were going on with it, but there had been unavoidable delay owing to difficulty in getting material, etc. Huntly School. The Huntly School Committee asked the Council to assist in the erection of a footbridge over the river leading to the suggested new school site. It was resolved that the Council is prepared to pay its proportion of the cost of the footbridge if the school is erected. Crown’s Liability for Rates. The Eketahuna County Council pointed out that it had suffered considerable loss of general rale owing lo the Land Purchasing Board purchasing land for settlement, and leas'ng the" land on grazing right leases for considerable periods, during whim time the Crown refused to pay general rates. They asked assistance in having the law amended that when the Grown purchased land for settlement the Crown should pay general rates for the pei’iod of its occupation. —Support accorded. A Dominion Governor. The Hastings Borough Council asked support of a motion that the Governor of the Dominion should he selected from the people of the Dominion, and that the name of General Sir Andrew Russell be submitted for appointment.—Councillors agreed that it would be advisable to appoint a Governor within the Dominion, hut the matter was outside the province of the Council. Peace Celebrations.

The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the proposals of the Government respecting the peace celebrations. There were three objects in the celebrations; To express gratitude for victory, to honour the soldiers, and to impress upon the children the importance of the event. —lt was resolved to purchase a flagstaff and flag. Engineer’s Report. Mr.. E. reported:—” I suggest that we get 'he material and have the re-decking of Robertson’s bridge on Maramaru road, near County boundary, carried out, at a cost of £BO. Ten linger posts are needed in in the Whangamarino Riding, on the main roads; aiso in other parts of the County.” The report was adopted. General.

Cr. Newell considered it was, neces sary that the fence adjoining tit office, which was in bad order, shout be attended to; also that a landim stage and a larger shed be created.— Agreed to.

It was stated that about 1000 dog collars had- been sold to the County.

Mr. A. L. Macdonald, Kopuku, asked that something be done to protect the embankment at the Kopuku bridge in the way of fascines on portion of the western bank. —Referred to Whangamarino Road Board.

Mr W. Hea.Ven. Maramarua, drew attention to the bad state of a small piece of road between Robinson’s and Okearea. He understood that the Government made a grant to keep the road in order.—Refered to Whangamarino Road Board.

The Tauranga Hospital Board asked support of a resolution urging that the clearing up of native pas be considered by. a Government Commission in order to reduce the nTenace to country towns, as it considered t/iat many pas were hotbeds of disease.— Referred to Inspector Bennett.
