COMPULSORY TRAINING
ELIMINATES THE LARRIKIN. AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE MINISTER’S TRIBUTE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received March 27, 8.55 p.m. LONDON, March 25. Hon. G. F. Pearce, Federal Minister of Defence, in an interview, said that a pleasing feature of the effect of compulsory training in Australia had been the abolition of the larrikin who formerly lounged in the streets addressing rude remarks to women; this unlovely type had disappeared. Instead of spending their ‘time unprofltably, the Australian youths had been turned into the men of splendid physique, who had made the Commonwealth’s name glorious in the annals of the war.
