ON OTHER FRONTS

ANGLO-AMERICAN ADVANCE ON A NINE-MILE FRONT. MEETS STRONG OPPOSITION. SEVEN GERMAN DIVISIONS ENGAGED. MANY COUNTER-ATTACKS REPULSED. OVER 3000 PRISONERS TAKEN. (Australian and N.Z. and Reuter.) Received October 19. 11.10 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 18, 12.35 a.m. Sir Douglas Haig reports that yesterday morning the British and Americans attacked on a nine-mile front northeastward of Rohain. They met with strong opposition on the whole front, and there was heavy fighting all day. On the right the British, attacking in close co-operation with the French northward of the Oise, advanced two miles in depth across high wooded ground east of Bohaim, and captured Andigny les Fermes. Further north we carried the line of the Selle river on the whole front southward of Lecateau, and progressed to the high ground eastward of the river, capturing Le Vallee, Mulatre and l'Arbre de Guise. On the left flank of the attack we carried the eastern portion of Le Cateau and established ourselves on the line of railway behind the town. The enemy held these positions in force, seven German divisions being on the front of the attack, and they delivered a number of determined counter-attacks, all of which were repulsed with heavy losses to the enemy. We took over 3000 prisoners in these operations. AMERICANS RE-CAPTURE GRAND PRE. 2200 PRISONERS TAKEN. Received October 19, 11.25 a.m. LONDON, October 18. American official: We recaptured and passed beyond Grand Pre, taking an additional 1000 prisoners. A French communique states that the French in the region of the Oise sharply attacked all day between Andigny Andigny Forest and the river, and captured Petit Verly, Marchavenne and Mont Dorigny, taking 1200 prisoners. The enemy furiously counter-attacked west of Grand Pre, where we advanced north of Oligny.
