Received October 18, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, October 17, 1.20 p.m. Sir Douglas Haig reports that the enemy delivered a strong local counterattack at Haussy, pressing us back to the western edge of the village, where fighting is proceeding. NEW BRITISH ATTACK REACHES WITHIN EIGHT MILES OF VALENCIENNE6. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received October 18, 10.5 p.m. LONDON, October 17. To-day's new advance from Le Cuteau progressed two miles, and the Allies arc five miles from the Valenciennes-Hirson railway and eight miles from Valenciennes itself. LE CATEAU CLEARED AGAINBT DETERMINED COUNTER-ATTACKS. (High Commissioner's Cable.) LONDON, October 16, 1 a.m. Sir Douglas Haig reports that to-day we cleared the eastern portion of Le Cateau against the determined counter-altacks of seven German divisions, taking 3000 prisoners.
