MATAMATA. TOWN ROARI) MEETING. The first meeting of the newlyelected Town Board was held this week, Messrs J. Price, H. A. Keiso, W. A. Gordon and G. G. Bell, being present. On the motion of Messrs Vosper and Kelso, Mr Price was unanimously reelected chairman. Matters in connection with town sani tation were discussed at length, and a Ji/MJ of action was decided upon in connection with the acquisition of a property in this conneotion on the Mangawhero road. The Minister for Lands wrote to the chairman as follows: "With reference to the. representations made by you to me at Matamata in support of a request by selectors in the Tapapa Settlement for the construction of a light bridge orer the Waihou river, to give them shorter access to Matamata, I have to state that on enquiry I find that to provide a suitable bridge would cost about £IOOO, and if tho bridge were erected further expenditure would be necessary up to about £I3OO for metalling the road leading to it, as without metal the road would not satisfactorily carry regular dairying traffic. There is already fair means of access to the settlement, and it is not considered that expenditure on tho suggested bridge is warranted at present. Whatever money becomes available would be better expended in metalling the sold icrs holdings. The letter will be sent to the soldier settlers. The replv was not considered satisfactory, and'it is proliable that further overtures will I** made. The proposed bridge would oring the soldiers nearly four miles nearer Matamata.
