BRITISH LAND AT OSTEND

AMERICANS ADVANCE ON THE MEUSE THE PEACE NEGOTIATIONS ANOTHER GERMAN MOVE PENDING By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright. THE ALLIED DRIVE IN FLANDERS IMPORTANT SUCCESSES GAINED ALONG THE WHOLE LINE. (Australian and New Zealand Cable Association.) Received October 17 i 7.30 p.m. LONDON, October IG. Mr Philip (libbs writes:—The Anglo-French-Belgian attack gained important successes along the whole line. It is interesting to note that the number of prisoners captured is almost equally divided between the tlnee Allied armies, making 12,000 altogether. The British contribution is 372:t, exclusive, of wounded, also 50 guns. The German machine-gunners at Roulers did not surrender until entirely cut off. When finally silenced old women and haggard and pale men in peasant's clothes came from cellars, crying "We are saved." The Herman prisoners seemed well-informed abc%xt recent events, and their constant refrain was, "We want peace." COMBINED ATTACKS THREATEN GERMANS IN COASTAL REGION. LOOTING CARRIED OUT BY INSTRUCTION OF GERMAN OFFICERS. VILLAGES STRIPPED BARE BEFORE THE ADVANCE OF THE VICTORIOUS ALLIES. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received October 17, 7.30 p.m. LONDON, October lf». The Havas Agency states that on the Flanders lronl numerous German prisoners were found carrying property looted at Roulers and elsewhere. They declared that they did this by the actual orders of their officers, whom they named. Five of the latter were taken prisoners at Roulers and were arrested. They demanded to interview the corps commander, but the latter refused to see them, saying he would have no relations with them. These arrested officers will be court-martialled. Everywhere before the victorious Allied advance the Germans removed civilians from the Belgian villages, which were then stripped bare. The prisoners are continually asking if the armistice lias yet been signed. They are agreed that the Kaiser must g'o, and saltt: "The Crown Prince does not count. We don't bother about him." Owing to the unsuitability of the swampy ground hereabouts the British are not using tanks, but the French tanks are doing great service. The combined attack already threatens the Germans in the coastal region between Xicuport and Ostend. and they must hurriedly withdraw from this narrow corridor, otherwise the door will be slammed on them. More to the southward our advance towards Courtrai puts the enemy in the Lille neighbourhood into a deep pocket, while Douai is almost encircled. 100,000 FUGITIVES FROM ANTWERP GOING TO HOLLAND.
