A PECULIAR CASE. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUXEDIX, Friday. At the Police Court, Arthur Patrick McUuire was charged that, between -May, 19JT, anrl August, 1918, .-it Christehurch. he obtained from William John Cupples tl9i by means <,f false pretences, to wit, that he was endeavouring to obtain the release of a young girl from a convent. Chief-Detective Bishop said the facts as related by the complainant were extraordinary. He lived at Christehurch, and while working at the convent became acquainted with a young woman there and conceived a desire to obtain her release. He got to know the accused and mentioned the matter to liirn. Accused told him that he could obtain the release if money were put up. and iu order to do so said he would get two detectives from Wellington. These alleged detectives wore duly introduced to complainant, and from time to time sums of money were obtained from him. Accused was remanded to appear at Christehurch on Tuesdav.
