FALSE PRETENCES

AND ALLEGED FORGERY. ■ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. At the Police Court, Hamilton, this morning, before Messrs Tidd and Maguire J'sP., Wilfred Martin was arraigned on a series of charges. De-tective-Sergeant Cooney represented tlie police. T!ic charges were as follows : (1) 'Hint, with intent to defraud, lie obtained £1 from May Campliell, at Ashcott, by lalsely representing that lie liad lost a pocket-l>ook containing a hank draft, and that he was going to g<",# another bank draft payable at Waipukurau. (2) Failing to provide his wife, at 1 e Arolia, with adequate maintenance. (3) On or about July 4th. at Ngaruawaliia. with intent to defraud, he forged a cheque for £'l 10s, purporting to be signed by T. Healv and uttered same to Harry Radford. (4) In July, 1917. at Auckland, he forged the name of T. Healv to a cheque for £lO 16s, and uttered same to Harry Davis. Accused pleaded guilty to the first charge, and at the suggestion of De-tective-Sergeant Cooney, who mentioned that there were other charges pending pgainst him, he was convicted aird ordered to come up for sentence at a later date. In the other three charges Detective Sergeant Cooney asked for a remand until the 2-3 th inst., which was granted.
