THE HUN DEVASTATION
GERMAN PROTEST AGAINST FRANCO-BRITISH AGITATION. THE DESTRUCTION ASCRIBED TO THE ALLIED ARTILLERY. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received October IC\ 7.10 p.m. AMSTERDAM, October 15. Rerlin telegrams protest against the unheard-of Franco-British agitation regarding the so-culled devastation in Northern France, in the course of the. backward movement of the Germans, and ascribe the. devastation to the Franco-British artillery. AMSTERDAM, October 15. Berlin official: The German Command has requested the Swiss to inform the French that owing to fears of bombardment a severe panic is probable ampnpst the civilians in the region of Lille and Valenciennes, and intimates ib-rt the Dutch Government, which has been asked for aid has agreed to shelter fugitives as far as possible. A further Berlin message announces the flight of 30,000 civilians* and proposes that the Allies should agree to refrain from bombarding the towns of Northern France, adding that Germany is prepared to come, to an agreement for part of the population to cross into the enemy lines. Failing compliance Germany will not be responsible for the civilians in the occupied territory.
