GORSE AT FRANKTON.

To the Editor. Sir, —1 \v:is glad to sec .Mi' Toon's letter on this subject, and also that the matter had been taken notice of I>y t!ie Council. There is a. story of a young man who had preached his first sormon to a congregation. In answer to his mother's question when ho got home as to how lie h;id got on, he said: "I think I pleased very well, for quite a number of the people were laughing." Hamilton prides itself in lieing up to date. AY hen distinguished visitors come they are motored around. If brought to see a number of the streets on the south side of the railway they might have a hoartv laugh. Things are getting worse. Some years ago the old borough workmen levelled streets and made footpaths. In some parts the gorse has taken full possession of footpath and watertable- Burns speaks of the "Auld ling" of Ayr as being so narrow that two harrows tremble when they meet. Women with prams may well tremble when they meet any vehicle 011 some of our streets. lam interested in many sections in this locality and endeavour to keep them clean. About three weeks ago I went over one facing Killarney road. Along one boundary fence there was high gorse which had not been cut for a long time, and it was in blossom. Two dangers threatened me. One was that it might l>o set on fire and destroy the fence; the other was, if allowed to grow it would cast seed a few yards on my clean ground. To protect myself I spent a half-day on my neighbour's side of the fence. The general effect of neglecting to keep down gorse is to lower the value of property, and the innocent suffer with the irailtv.—l am, etc. , JOHN RAMSAY. Frankton, October 14, 1918.
