NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Board was held at Te Kowhai on Monday. Present: Messrs Laxon (chairman). Masters. Saulbrey, Gallagher and Jones. Mr Primrose, To Kowhai, requested that the road from the river to Collie's road be formed. As he was not a ratepayer to the Newcastle Board, his land being on the west side of the river, lie would contribute a few pounds towards the cost. Mr R. Barton also offered £2, and would undertake the work if the Hoard wished.— Request granted, Mr Saulbrey to arrange terms with Mr Barton. Mr Collie also urgently requested that other portions of his road be formed in the dry weather, and not left till winter, as is usual with the Board.— The Board assured him that they would endeavour to cary out his wishes. Mr Blackett enquired whether there was any chance of petting more sanding done on his road this season. He paid one-third of the cost of what was done last year. Mr E. McGregor, who was the largest ratepayer in the Newcastle district, also used the same road.—lt was decided to have the sanding done when the teams are in that locality. Mr 1). Lee, Rotokauri, offered to make a drain on Sopor's swamp road for £2 5s per chain.—The Board considered the price too high, and" the matter was left in Mr Jones' hands. As the drain will benefit Mr (I. Edgecumhe's properly, it was decided to ask hi.m to contribute to the cost. Mr B. li. Duxfleld. Horotiu, wrote refusing to pay the cost of proceedings in connection with ttie dedication of a piece of road to connect with the roads on the Horotiu Park estate. He stated that he had a right-of-way for all time over the road in question which he could confer to the section holders, and would therefore gain nothing personally from the dedication.—Letter received. The Government subsidy on rates, amounting to £lsl Os 2d, was received. A circular was received from the Auckland Provincial Employers' Association informing the Board of the new demands to be made by the Labourers' I'nion. and requrstine die Board to send a delegate to attend ;i meeting to arrange counter-pronosals, etc. The Board considered 'that this matter could very well !„■ leff to the more important local bodies to deal with: it was. therefore, decided to take no action.

Mr S. B. Sims. Hamilton, forwarded specifications of the concrete culvert to be erected on the Te Kowhai-Horotiu road, and it was resolved to invite, tenders, to he in by next meeting.
