A FAKED PASSBOOK
MAORIS NOVEL SCHEME. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A novel scheme adopted bv a Young educated .Maori, named Waatu' Matenga, for raising money was revealed at Court when he pleaded guilty to ten charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques amounting to £73 Is, from tradesmen in AVanganui, Marton and Stratford. At one time time accused had a small banking ae_ count at Waipuknrau, and before ho commenced operations faked his passbook to represent a large sum to credit, and the hook was produced when cheques wore issued to support the suggestion that accused was a man of means. Wyv.ern Wilson, S.M., sentenced him to 12 months' reformative detention.
