GERMANS FIGHT HARD BETWEEN LE CATEAU AND ST. VAAST. FIERCE COUNTER-ATTACKS SUPPORTED BY TANKS. BRITISH TENACITY TRIUMPHS AND THE ADVANCE CONTINUES. Received October 14, 10.10 p.m. LONDON, October 13. Reuter's correspondent at British headquarters, writing on Sunday evening, says:—Between Le Cateau and St. Vaast the Germans in strength arc lighting hard. We renewed our attack here yesterday and very severe lighting occurred along the railway embankment from Montiy to Neuvllly. Large new enemy forces were fiercely counter-attacking, supported by tanks, the whole morning, but by the afternoon British tenacity triumphed and we arc pursuing the Germans eastward. PROGRESS MADE ON THE WEST BANK OF THE SELLE RIVER. UNABLE TO .MAINTAIN POSITIONS ON THE SENSES CANAL. (Australian and New Zealand and Reuter.) Received October 14, 10.43 p.m. LONDON, October 13, 11.20 p.m. Sir Douglas Haig reports that local engagements continued on the line of the Selle river. We enlarged our bridgehead position in the neighbourhood of Solcsmes-*and made progress on the west bank of the river about Haussy and Saulzoin. We took prisoners in local fighting in Uio neighbourhood of Lien-St. Amand. Early this morning our troops crossed the Sens.?e Canal at Aubigny au Bac, but were unable to maintain their position in the fact of a strong counter-attack. We continued our advance north-west «>f Douai. We hold Gourcelles-lez-Lens and Noyelle-Godault, and are approaching the line of the Laute Deule Canal, on the whole front, between Douai and Vendin-le-Vieil. We took a number of prisoners in this sector.
