CHARGES OF THEFT

CONVICTIONS ENTERED. At the Police Court, Hamilton, this morning, before Mr Dawson SM several charges of theft against'two accused, wer e heard. James McFadden, a young man, was charged on remand, with the theft of a brooch valued at £5, the propertv of Mrs Edith Henley, ar-.d two silver watches valued at £3 10s, the property ot the late Adam Fort. He was further charged with the theft, at Horotiu, on October 2nd, of a pair of riding breeches, valued at 15s, th e propertv of Harry Poynfcer. Accused pleaded guilty to all the charges. Senior-Sergeant Cassells mentioned that the property had been recovered. Accused had not previously been before the Court. He had already spent a week in gaol. In reply to the Magistrate, accused said he had stolen the articles because he was out of work.

His Worship convicted accused, and ordered him to come up for sentencewhen called unon. COMMITTED FOD SENTENCE.

A young Maori, named John Martin was charged with having, at Taupiri, on or about October 7th. broken into and entered the shop of David Young, hairdresser, and stolen therefrom goods (including tobacco, cocoanut oil, shaving brushes, brilliantine, cold cream, and matches) to the value of £2 6s.

Senior-Sergeant Cassells represented the police. He stated that the window of Mr Young's shop was broken, the shop entered, and the articles stolen. Next day Constable Wade interviewed the young Native, who admitted the crime, and took him to an empty house, where most of the goods were discovered.

Evidence to this effect was given by David Young and Constable Wade. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence. Martin was further charged with the theft of a saddle and bridle, thp property of Frederick Littlewood, of Taupiri. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Cassells stated that accused had previously been before the Court on a charge of theft, and had been sent to the Weraroa School, afterwards being licensed out to his father. Accused was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
