SOLDIERS' GRAVES

SUGGESTED RESERVATION. AT HAMILTON KAST GKMETKHY. Captain Bellamy, O.C. X«. i Group, asked the Borough Council on Friday In set aside a portion of tlie Hamilton Kast Cemetery fas shown in plan submilted as a special reservation for the interment of deceased soldiers. The Captain pointed out that quite a number of soldiers would have to be buried there who have no relatives in the district, and if their graves were placed haphazard all over the district it would lie very difficult to keep in touch with them, and the labours of the Indies of the Victoria League would be increased unnecessarily. Further than that, the man who had laid down his life for his country was worthy of finding a final resting place in such a position that, his action would ever be before the people for them and theirs to imitate. The Captain stated that the other day a soldier whose relatives reside in Melbourne was buried at Hamilton East, and he wondered whether there was any fund which provided for a beadstone or cross to be erected to mark the spot. The Mayor approved of the idea. At some future date, it might be possible to erect an obelisk as a fitting memorial to the brave fellows, strangers to the district, who had died as a result of their injuries. He moved, that the land be set aside as requested. This was agreed to.

Cr, Yotfflff .further moved that Capt. Bellamy be advised to communicate with Miss Statham, a Government official, in regard to the erection of crosses. She would probably be able tfl give him the Information asked for.— The motion was carried.
