SOLDIER SETTLERS
HARDSHIPS AT TE MIRO. SEVEN OF TWELVE COWS DIE. At yesterday's meeting of the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard .Mr Dickinson, on behalf of the Cambridge Patriotic Society, asked the consideration of the Board in the matter of an account for £f> for hospital treatment owing by a soldier settler at le Miro. "Ihe settlers are having a very rough time," said Mr Dickinson, "and this man is quite unable to pay." Mr Campliell Johnstone: "Considering the country, I don't wonder that they are having a bad time. It is a crying shame to put inexperienced men on land without grass, and expect them to milk cqws." Mr Dickinson: "One settler has lost seven out of his 12 cows. It is a most unfortunate matter." Mr Johnstone: "Those who put the soldiers there ought to be put in gaol."
