HONOURS FOR AIRMEN

A cablegram has been received stating that Flight-Major Keith L. Caldweil lias hoen awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He is the only son ot Mr D. R. Caldwell, of Cambridge, and since he hns been attached to tl'.e Royal Flying Corps, iias had a brilliant career, having met with very great success in this difficult branch of th.i service. Up to last March it was reported that he had personally destroyed five enemy machines 011 the Western front, and had been in over 50 aerial battles. He has displayed unusual skill and «;reat bravery, and last year was awarded the [Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duly. On one occasion he led a patrol of five machines against 12 hostile aircraft, all of which were driven down out of control. Major Caldwell, who was formerly on the staff of the Auckland branch csf the Rank of New Zealand. was one of the -irst pupils to qualify at the New Zealand Flying School :'t I\ohim;>v:;inn. He is at present commanding a squadron in France.

Hewett. of the Royal Air Force, son of .Air Basil Hewett, cable censor, Auckland, formerly cf Waingaro, where C'antain Hewett was Imrn, has been awarded the French Croix de Guerre, with palm.
