General Marshall's first dispatch covers operations in Mesopotamia from October 1, 1917, to March 31, 1918. Details of the successful expedition up the Euphrates against the Turkish concentration beyond Hit, also the operations on the Diala River, ejecting the Turks from Khankin and opening the road to Northern Porsia.
The dispatch explains that carp waa taken not to camp troops within the holy cities of Kerhela and Nedjef. Sonic irreconcilable at Nedjef fired on our troops exercising near the town, causing a few casualties. General Mar. shall, not desiring to injure a town, full of sacred memories for the Mohammedans, decided to punish the two leading sheikhs responsible tor the offence, but the sheikhs fled and they have lieen outlawed.. Captain W. M. Marshall, the political officer at Nedjef, was murdered on March 21, whereupon the British stirrounded the town with military posts, joined by barbed wire, until those implicated were given up.
