HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. His "Worship the Mayor (Mr J. P. Pow) presided over the ordinary meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening, the others present bein? Crs. Praser Smith, Gosling, Mason, Herbert. Howden, Jolly, Lafferty. Sneli. Tidd, Tristram and Tombs. Correspondence.

The Minister of Public Works intimated that the matter of the completion of the Frankton-Kawhia-Te Anga road through the Moerangi block will receive consideration when the Estimates were being prepared.—Received.

The telegraph engineer notified that no objection would be made to the batter to section on Bridge street, provided it is made 2 to 1 and turfed. —Referred to Works Committee. The gasworks engineer forwarded explanation regarding discrepancy in gas sold in that there was probably an irregularity in the survey. Unaccount-ed-for gas was also showing an increase, and this might also contribute. —Received..

The Minister of Defence intimated that the Council's explanation re demand for rates made upon soldiers at the front clearly showed "that there was no intention on the part of the Council to penalise the soldier."— ■Received.

The secretary of the Hamilton Swimming Club requested the Council to have the proposed improvements at the baths expedited so that they could be effected by the opening of the season.—Referred to the Raths Committee with a request that the work be pushed ahead. The New Plymouth Rorough Council forwarded a protest against the cancellation of the Municipal Conference, "owing to war condition," for which it asked support.—Received. The Hamilton Municipal Rand asked for permission to use the rotunda for a Red Cross concert, and also to take up a collection, on Sunday, September 15. —Granted. Mr John Taylor, Hamilton East, asked the Council to re-consider its decision re supp'.y of water to his section. —Application granted, and fin pipe will be put in, subject to provisions stipulated by the engineer.

Mr T. B. Dillicar renewed his application for current for lighting and power purposes for his business premises. Requests were also made by Messrs R. English, J. B. Pomeroy. C. B. Smith and W. H. Thompson.—Referred to the Electrical Committee.

The Waikato Motor Company complained of the state of the HamiltonFrankton road, stating that for the past eight months the road had been a disgrace to the borough.—Received. Mr L. Griffiths forwarded an objection to the proposal to lower the grade of the hill and footnath outside his property and that of Mr Gaze. The present position was "quite all right, and satisfactory in every respect." Mr H. E. Gaze also wrote to the same effect.—Both communications were received. Mr M. T. Rowling. People's Pictures, Auckland, made an offer of £6 weekly for the Town Hall, for a term of six months, subject to the usual sulvlettings, stipulating that such were not to exceed'2s for the term. The applicant enquired as to the possibility of electrical installation. As there was some doubt as to ability of the works i to supplv the necessary power, the matter was referred to the Town Hall Committee to confer with the applicant. The Hamilton Operatic Society applied for the use of the Town Hall on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the same rate as last year.—Held over pending final decision regarding the fcas, of the hall. Miscellaneous. Messrs S. J. Metcalfe and Thos. Humphrey were granted taxi drivers IICPtISGS Miss Carr tendered her resignation as'assistant in the office.— Accepted with regret, the Town Clerk being authorised to take steps to fill the vacancy. ... A request from the stokers at the sasworks for an increase of wages was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. The Horse Bazaar committee asked leave to sit again in connection with the proposed dog pound. In accordance with notice of motion, the Mayor moved that the quorum for the Legal and Finance Committee be reduced to five.—Agreed to. The Mayor, Crs. Howden, Tristram and Tidd were appointed a committee to consider the question of procuring a suitable section on the north side of the railway line on which to stack metal, e'c. Several Applications for street lamps were deferred pending receipt of the report of the Electrical Committee on the question of lighting Victoria street. It was decided to ask the borough solicitor to frame a by-law dealing with several aspects of the dog nuisance. It was decided to go into the matter of erecting a workman's residence at the pumping station.
