CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING. _, The ord : :.;;n meel'iny of the Hamil- , ton Chair.'.-: of Cuiamcr-'c took phv-p j in the Borough Council Chambers last j night. Mr .). A. Hamill, the newlv- . elected |nt si.tout, occupied the chair, . and there wee also present Messrs , Burrow, II odd, Gaze, Snell, Bourne, 11. j Clarkin, Smith, Stevenson, Shaw, G. ] Parr, Parlane. Mr J. A. Young arriv- i e<l after his engagement at the cadet ; function. Mr Hamill returned thanks for his election as president for the ensuing twelve months. He appreciated the honour very much, and promised to do all he possib'y could in the office- He thought they should carry out a policy oc concentration —perhaps on the Arapuni hydro-electric .- homo, which would be a great thing for the district and the province. At Arapuni 120,000 horse-power could be generated, sufficient to supply the whole of the North Island. It had been suggested to him by Mr Shaw that in two or three months' time a motor car trip might ,be run to Arapuni, getting other local bodies to ,',l-ii.. - . .v...! them. He ihoug.u the suggestion an excellent one. The baiauee av the bank was stated to be £5 13s 3d, and the cash in hand £3 Is sd. The dinner account showed a slight surpius.—The balance-sheet was adopted. Mr H. A. Whitaker apologised for unavoidable absence. He expressed his appreciation of the work of the annual dinner committee, particularly Mr Hodd. The function was one of the most successful in every way ever held in Hamilton. The public attention that had been drawn to the matter of soldiers' settlements as a result of Mr Hammond's speech was sufficient evidence that the dinner had fulfilled, a great public purpose. Mr G. Parr tendered his sincere thanks for his election as vice-pre-sident. The Northern Fishermen's Union asked for support in their endeavour to urge upon the Government the urgent need of the further restriction of the trawling area in the Hauraki Gulf. The matter would affect the fish supplies in this district.—lt was decided to ask the secretary of the Union to meet the Chamber at its next meeting. The National Efficiency Board for. warded copy of an article, with diagram of deliveries in town districts, extracted from the New York Evening Mail. —The matter was thought to refer more to the cities, and the letter was "received." The idea was to prevent overlapping by merchants, which might be prevented by co-operation. The British Empire Union forwarded copy of its organisation, national policy and commercial policy, and asked for the Chamber's sympathy with its aims and objects.—Agreed to. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce asked support of a resolution, urging the adoption of the proposal for daylight saving, as "an urgent war regulation."—The Chamber decid. Ed to support the suggestion. The Napier Chamber of Commerce ; drew attention to the fact that in the calling up of reservists C2 men made I no sacrifice, end urged that the Government be asked to set up a board of control in regard to all trades, busiI nesses and professions, so as to put on : a more equitable footing those men I who have been called up.—The letter I was "received." Mr J. S. Bond thanked the Chamber I for its congratulations in connection 1 with his son's escape from the wrecked Wimmera. '. Mr R. A. Grigg was elected a memI her of the Chamber. '. On the motion of Mr Hodd, it was I decided to increase the secretary's I salary by £5 per annum. It was re- ■ cognised that Mr Nelson was doing I good service, quite out of proportion to I the small salary paid. Much of the I success of the Chamber is due to his efforts.
