FUTURE OF THE PACIFIC

COMBINED ALLIED ACTION URGED. I TO EXCLUDE TJIE OEHMANS. (Australian and N.Z, Cable Assn.) Received ,lulv L'o, >i a m WASHINGTON, July 19. _ v\lien Senate resumes on August 2-4 Senator Saulsbury will ask that action be taken on his resolution urging + he Vmted States, Britain, and Japan +o come to an agreement to prevent German- aggression in the Pacific.

-I here is a disposition among members of the Foreign Relations Committee to support the resolution. Several Senators from the Pacific coast, who are keenly interested, conferred with Senator Saulshury, and subsequently Senator Phelan of California, said it was of the greatest importance ihat some arrangement or alliance should be formed by the great powers of the. Pacific as a protection against German aggression, and in the ca.,e of necessity these [towers should police the Pacific. There should lie a frank understanding as to the Allies' respective interests, and the combined forces should tie bound in respect of Oie status quo. Action is necessary in the case, not only of Australia, but the west coast and island possessions of America. Germany will realise that a good understanding between the Powers in the Pacific would probably lead to a post-war trade agreement a"a : nst Germany. This may impel Germany to abandon her militaristic war aims and seek an earlier end to thj war. Senator Jones, of Washington Statej agreed as to the importance of Ihe questions, and said Congress should consider not only keeping German raiders out of the but whether any of Germany's former South Pacific possessions should be returned after the war.
