Newman, Unionist member for Enfieid, in the House of Commons called attention to the fact that a member of the Sacred College of Car. dinals was pledged to oppose conscrip. > tion in Ireland, and he asked whether the Vatican's attention had been drawn to the fact in view of the latter's neutrality. Mr A. J. Balfour, Secretary for Foreign Affairs, said he could "hardly believe that a member of the Sacred College would oppose the law when it was enforced. He had not communicated with the Vatican, assuming that the latter was kept fully informed.
