THE GERMAN MUTINY
CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE. MEN REFUSE TO GO TO SUBMARINE SCHOOL. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received November 26, 8.35 a.m. AMSTERDAM, Nov. 25. Wcyat, boatswain on the Dreadnought Kronprinz, who participated in the Kiel mutiny, has escaped to Holland. In an interview he stated that 300 sailors on the Kronprinz 'and Schleswig-Holstein, who were ordered to proceed to a submarine school for instruction, decided to Vevolt. When the Kronprinz's men were paraded for departure they refused to leave. Admiral von Schmidt struck Heilmann, the men's leader. Heilmann returned the blow, and floored the Admiral. The officers fired their revolvers at the mutineers, who used their rifles and knives'? Hand-to-hand conflicts ensued, and seven officers, including the Admiral, were thrown overboard, only the Admiral being rescued. The military police boarded the Kronprinz, and tlie mutineers surrendered. Six of the leaders were shot, and many others ore sentenced to terms of imprisonment up to 20 years.
