At the meeting of the Board of Education yesterday, Mrs H. A. Hannken was appointed assistant at the Mamaku School. '
Advice has been received that Corporal J. L. McGregor who was wellknown in Hamilton, where he was formerly in business as a land agent, has succumbed to wounds in France.
Mr W. Elliott, of Dudley Terrace, Frankton, has received advice that his son. Private \Y. Elliott, who loft with the 6th Reinforcements, was killed in action on October 12.
Mr A. A. Ross, provincial president of the Auckland, branch of the Farmers' Union, intends leaving shortly on a business trip to Canada and the United States. During Mr Ross' absence. Captain Colbeck, vice-president of the Union will act in his stead.
Our Thames correspondent telegraphs:—A very old resident. John West, died yesterday after a long illness. He arrived' at Thames in 1867. and was engaged blacksmithing and making agricultural implements. He was prize-taker for ploughs at Auckland shows. He was a former Past Master of Lodge Sir Walter Scott, No. 15.
Major George Barclay, N.Z.E., of Auckland, and formerly of Frankton. has been transferred from the New Zealand Division in France to the command of the New Zealand Engineer Re. serve Depot at Christchurch, Hants. He has seen active service in Gallipoli, EArypt, and France. Mrs Barclav has joined her husband in Christchurch. Gunner E. B. Heenan (son of Mrs Heenan. of Wellington), who has been reported wounded in action, was former, ly on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in Hamilton for about five Years, and left with the artillery section of the 21st Reinforcements. He was an active member of G Battery, holding the rank of Sergeant-Major, and took a keen interest in all branches of sport while in Hamilton. His many friends here will wish him a speedy recovery. Rev. E. 0. Blamires, who has been stationed for the past five years at Hawera. has accepted an invitation to the pastoral charge of the London Street Methodist Church, Hamilton, Mr Blamires, who has three brothers in the ministry, one of whom was formerly stationed at Hamilton, should become very popular here if the call is upheld by Conference. He takes a keen interest in various sports, having been for some time a representative cricketer in Wellington. News has been received that Sergeant Vincent Holbecke, of the 20th Reinforcements. was killed in action on October 18th. He was the son of Mrs Alf. Smith, whose husband is manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Wellington and formerly of Thames. The late Sergeant Holl>eoke was fanning at Roto-o-Rangi, and disposed of his property in order to join the forces. He leaves a widow and one child, the former being a daughter of Mr T. Barstow. of Epsom. Much sympathy will be felt for the relatives of the deceased soldier, who was the last surviving male of the Holbecke familv.
