Private advice baa been received to

the effect that Captain Thomas Ranstead has received his majority. As a Lieutenant, Major Ranstead left for the front as a member of the regimental staff, and upon his promotion to Captain was attached to the 4th Waikato Squadron, and is now O.C. 3rd Auckland Squadron. A farewell was tendered to Gunner Norris in the Te Rapa school on Friday last. Considering the inclement weather quite a number of people turned up, and after the chairman (Mr A. H. E. Ellicott) had spoken of the popularity of the departing soldier, the following musical programme was much enjoyed : Overture, Miss Dorothy Henderson; songs by Mr Norman and Miss Smith; piano solo, Miss Lindestrom; recitation, Mis 8 Kearnell; piano duet, Misses Kearnell and Ellicott. The accompanist wa s Miss Henderson. The chairman presented Gunner Norris with a set of ebony military brushes, and wished him God speed ,and a safe return. Gunner Norris feelingly replied, and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was aung. Supper was provided by the ladies. Lieutenant T. G. Hinton, who is on his final leave, was met at the residence of his father's, Eureka, on Monday night by his many friends to give him a farewell. Mr O'Hara presented the Lieutenant with a gold pendant and cigarette holder, and said the occasion was one to bo remembered owing to the Lieutenant being one of four brothers now on activ* service. The Lieutenant had seen a lot of fighting, and the most remarkable thing of all he has had no sxkness. Mr O'Hara wished him God speed and a safe return. The Lieutenant, in replying, said he felt that it was his duty to return to the front, much as hi felt leaving his home again. Mr Hinton (the father) stated that he felt overjoyed to meet so many of the Eureka friends, and added that his sons had only done what others had done. After many toasts had bee-i honoured, "For He's a Jollv Good Fellow" brought a happy night to a close.
