CONDITIONS IN AUSTRIA
THE DIBTREBB TERRIBLE. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received May 19, 9.45 a.m. NEW YORK, May 18. Mr Penfleld, the American Ambassador at Vienna, who has returned, interviewed by the New York Times, said that the distress in Austria was terrible, but we must not assume that the country is at the end of its resources. The masses know nothing of events in the outer world, being fed with newspaper lies about the strength of the Central Powers, while the Allies are, described as on the verge of collapse. He said he was surprised that Switzerland, although not participating, had spent 1,000,000,000 francs on army mobilisation.
