The Italian infantry by a rush, supported by a heavy barrage, carried all the heights round Gorizia. The Austrians in the last moments concentrated a deadly fire on Gorizia, where enormous damage was caused. ENEMY MASSED ATTACKS REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSSES. IMPORTANT HEIGHTS CAPTURED IN DIFFERENT SECTORS. (Australian and New Zealand and Reuter.) Received May 18, 9.40 p.m. LONDON, May 18. Italian official: After bitter fighting between Mont Cucco and Mont Vodice, the enemy's repeated massed attacks were repulsed. We retain the bastion on Mont Cucco from Height 610 to Height 524. We progressed towards the important summit of Height 652 on Mont Vodice. Enemy counter-attacks eastward of Gorizia were broken. We occupied an important height southward of Grazigna and repulsed a serious powerful attack in the northern sector of the Carso. We have taken 4031 prisoners in three days.
