AUCKLAND MARKETS

Messrs A. Buckland and Sons report:—On Wednesday, at our weekly Wistfield fat stock market, our entry of fat cattle totalled 365 head, comprising 217 seers, 142 cows and heifers, and six bulls. The majority of the steer beef was again of excellent quality. The demand was less keen than recent sales, and generally values receded slightly. C ioi eox sold to £2 8s 6d per 1001b, prime £2 6s 6d to £2 Bs, and ordinary £1 16s to £2 3s, co vs and heifers £2 2s to £2 6s; steers ranged in price from £l2 10s to £25, cows and hei.ers, £9 to £l7 12s 6d. The highest Waikato averages for steers were:—Mr Joseph Slater, Pukekawa, £-0 6s sd; 12 from Mr H. E. Reed, Waerenga, £l7 5s 9d; 45 choice three-year-old steers, from Messrs T. Wilson and Sons, Waimai, £ls 7s Id; nine from Mr C. J. Storey, Woodstock, Te Awamutu, £l4 16s j 16 from Mr W. J. Ralph, Taupiri, £l4 los 6d. The steer donated by Mr Geo. Niccol, of Remuera, to the Red Cross Fund, realised £25 (equal to £3 5s per 1001b). The steer presented by Mr John McCarroll to the Y.M.C.A Trench Fund brought £l4 10s. Mr Geo. Coxhead, of Manurewa, also presented a steer to the last-named fund, which realised £ls ss. There was about an average entry of mutton, including several consignments of extra prime sheep. Competition was steady throughout, the recent advance being sustained. Extra heavy prime wethers, £2 2s 6d to £2 ss; medium to heavy prime wethers, £1 16s to £1 18s 6d; unfinished, £1 13s 6d to £1 15s 6d; small store wethers, £1 8s to £1 lis; extra heavy prime ewes, £1 18s to £2 0s 3d; 90 from Messrs Urquhart, Karaka, averaged £1 18s 2d; good ewes, £1 14s to £1 17s 6d; other ewes, £1 5s to £1 12s; aged store ewes, 15s to £1 2s (1457 sold)). The 379 lambs which came forward were required, although a big proportion were unfinished. Best heavy, £1 8s to £1 10s 3d; good lambs, £1 4s 6d to £1 7s 6d; light and unfinished, los 6d to £1 3s. Young and fat calves were penned in full numbers, and sold at slightly under last week's quotations. Runners brought from £6 7s to £lO 15s; heavy vealers, £5 2s to £6; medium, £3 lis to £4 15s; light, £2 to £3 Is; small and freshdropped, lis to £1 16s; weak and inferior, 3s to 10s (124 penned). A full yarding of pigs met with keen competition at last week's improved values. Choppers and heavy baconers sold at from £4 to £5 ss; others, £3 8s to £3 19s; large porkers, £2 14s to £3 ss; medium. £2 5s to £2 12s 6d; small, £1 12s to £2 3s; slips, 16s to £1 10s; weaners and suckers, 5s to 14s; runts, 3s upwards (367 sold). Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having held their weekly fat stock sale at Westfield on Wednesday, as under: —Beef: An average yarding, and prices were on a par with late rates. Choice pens of extra prime ox sold at equal to 50s per 1001b, ordinary prime ox up to 48s per 1001b, cow and heifer beef 39s to 445. Veal: A good yarding, which sold at late rates. Extra heavy ■runners made up to £10" 12s 6d, heavy suckers up to £6 10s, small ditto 37s to 495, others 16s to 28s. Mutton: A medium yarding, and prices were equal to last week's rates. Heavy wethers made up to 36s to 445, medium weight weth«rs 34s to 36s 6d, light and unfinished up to 32s 9d to 35s 6d, extra heavy fat ewes up to 38s, mediumweight ewes 26s to 345. Lamb: A small yarding, and prices were equal to late rates. Best heavy prime wooly made up to 28s, medium-weight 21s to 245, light and unfinished 18s to 235, heavy shorn up to 225, medium-weight shorn 18s to 19s, light and unfinished 13s to 20s.
