At a meeting of the Nationalist'party before to-day's sitting of the House of Commons it was decided to oppose the second reading of the Bill to extend the life of Parliament. In moving the second reading of the Extension of Parliament Bill, Mr Bonar Law, Leader in the House of Commons, said: "We are at the m<*t critical phase of the war. Our success has .; exceeded our expectation and has proved that the quality of our men, their equipment and training Eu-e more-than a match for their opponents. It would be' highly disadvantageous to the country to be plunged into the turmoil of an election which would divert the « ' energy of the nation from its supreme j object." P Mr Asquith said that the receqj by- " elections showed that only 50 to 65 per " cent, of the electors registered were available, and a general election under such conditions would be a farce and a sham.
