BOXING DAY CARNIVAL

BIG ENJOYMENT PROGRAMME. A DISTRICT OUTING. The programme for the Boxing Day carnival at the Hamilton Lake Reserve m aid of the funds of the Beautifying Society, will consist of maypole dances* swimming races, greasy boom, greasy pole, swings, .skittle alley, tug-o'-war, launch trips, boating, archery, sack races, potato races, motor rides, guessing competitions, and rowing races, a Hater shoot, see-saws, and a Christmas tree. Refreshments will be provided on the ground, while arangements will be made to convey visitors between the .pounds and the town, at a reasonable charge. Admission to the grounds will be a shilling tor adults and sixpence for children.

The matter was discused by the Beauti-' fying Society last night, when Mr George Parr, who was present at the Society's invitation, was voted to the chair, and appointed director of the carnival. Mr Parr favoured a fete on a larger scale than at first proposed. It would entail very little more trouble, he said, to amplify the function. It had been suggested, owing to the war, that the carnival should be on a rather subdued scale, but the speaker did not see, as the object was a worthy one, and as the people would, in lieu of the carnival, look for some other form of amusements, that the society should not go out to make every post a winning one. The speaker suggested negotiating with the Waikato Shipping Company to run excursions from Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Hototiu. Recently a river trip from Huntly brought about 120 people to town, but there was nothing on in the town at the time. He thought the excursion ticket might aluo include admission to the grounds. He proposed also to try and arrange with the owners of the different motor 'busses to run cheap fares between the post office and station and the Lake, say at 3d per head.

The committee will be grateful for donations of fruit and refreshments of any saleable nature. 6ifts will be received by the ladies' committee at the old Borough Chambers on the Saturday prior to Boxing Day, and on the morning of the carnival, also at the Lake later in the day. A full athletic programme will be provided, while additional events will be added to the programme as the arrangements progress.
