NO REGENT GROWTH
To prove that New Zealand's antiGerman feeling is not a plant of recent growth, the Wellington i J ost says that a correspondent quotes in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph a remark by Sir Joseph Ward at the Imperial Conference in 1907. Sir Joseph was urging that the lowers owning the Suez Canal should .'llow their own vessels to go through free of toll. -Mr Asquith remarked with some surprise: "So that you would not allow the Germans to go through free?" "Not at the same rate," replied Sir Joseph, "why should we? If you own a good thing why give it to au opponent who is trying to cut your throat every day in the week upon even terms?"
