THE POSITION IN TRANSYLVANIA

ROUMANIANS HOLD DOMINATING HEIGHTS AT PETROSENY. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) BUCHAREST, October 9. The situation on the Roumanian front is unchanged. The Roumanians hold the heights dominating Petroseny, in Transylvania, and Jiu Valley, and have possession of the Caineri defile. The Roumanians evacuated Kronstadt in order to avoid the destruction of other public buildings, in which the enemy were firing. The position of the army is excellent. A Roumanian communique states:—"The Roumanians in the Kronstadt district have been obliged to retire towards the northern ends of the Carpathian passes. Minor infantry and artillery actions favourable to the Roumanians took place in the Caineni and Vulcan Passes. There have been fierce artillery duels east of Zimicea, on the Danube." AMSTERDAM, October 9. An Austrian communique states:—"There was stubborn street fighting in Kronstadt before the Roumanians retired. General Falkenhayn's troops drove back the Roumanian's near Toerzburg, south-west of Kronstadt, and stopped and defeated them near Foldvar. The army of General von Aarz is now penetrating the Georgany Mountains, farther north."
