SHIRKING FAMILIES
WAIKATO'S HEAVY LIST.
"ASHAMED TO BE A FARMER."
The Waitomo County Council is seeking the co-operation of local bodies in urging the Government to put the military ballot into force, the Council considering that too many youths are volunteering, whilst older and matured men eligible for service are hanging back.
hen the W aipa County Council was asked to support the proposal yesterday, Cr. Alexander said he had seen some of the lists of shirking families, and he Was almost ashamed to be a farmer. Some of the best-known and wealthiest families in Waikato were hanging back, placing Waikato amongst the greatest shirking districts in the Dominion. He thought the Council should give the proposal its hearty support. This the Council did.
