AMERICAN CRUISER LOST

(Australian and X.Z. Cable Assn.) Received August 31, 9 a.m. ; XE\Y YORK, August 30. A message from San Domingo states that the cruiser .Memphis was driven ashore in a storm. A gunboat went to the rescue. Twenty lives were lost during the removal of the crew. The inrushing water extinguished the cruiser's fires. The commander reports that the cruiser will be a total loss. /
